How Long Do Solar Panels Last in Houston's Climate?

Quality solar panels installed in Houston should produce for 30 to 35 years, with a manufacturer performance warranty typically guaranteeing at least 85–92% of original output at year 25. Panels rarely fail outright. They fade, slowly and predictably.

What Houston does test is everything around them — heat, humidity, hail and hurricane-force wind.

Degradation: the number that actually matters

Modern monocrystalline panels degrade at roughly 0.3–0.5% per year. Premium tiers sit at the low end.

At 0.4% annually, a panel producing 100% in year one is still delivering around 90% by year 25 and roughly 86% at year 35. That is why “lifespan” is a soft concept with solar — there is no cliff, just a gentle slope. Most arrays are replaced because newer panels are more efficient, not because the old ones stopped working.

What Houston heat does

This is the local factor people underestimate. Solar panels lose efficiency as they get hotter — typically 0.3–0.4% of output per degree Celsius above 25°C.

On a 38°C August afternoon in Houston, panel surface temperature can exceed 65°C, cutting instantaneous output by 10–15%. This does not damage the panels or shorten their life; it is simply why a well-designed Houston system is sized against real production modelling rather than nameplate capacity.

Good airflow helps. Panels mounted with proper standoff from the roof deck run measurably cooler than flush-mounted ones, which is one of several reasons racking quality matters.

Hail, hurricanes and Gulf storms

Panels sold in this market are typically certified to withstand 1-inch hail at 50 mph and wind uplift of 140+ mph. Tempered glass on a quality module is genuinely tough — in most Gulf Coast storms, panels come through better than the shingles surrounding them.

The real vulnerability is not the glass, it is the attachment. Wind uplift failures are almost always racking or fastener failures, which makes engineering to Harris County wind-load code and correct rafter attachment the thing to scrutinise in a quote.

Your array should also be covered under your homeowners policy as an attached structure. Confirm that with your insurer, and notify them once the system is installed.

Humidity and the Gulf Coast air

Houston’s humidity is hard on electrical connections. Salt-laden air matters most closer to Galveston Bay. Corrosion-resistant hardware, properly sealed junctions and correctly rated conduit are what prevent moisture ingress at the connector level — a slow failure mode that shows up as gradually declining production years down the line.

The component that will not last 30 years

Panels outlive their inverters. Plan for this.

  • String inverters: typically 10–15 years, with a 10–12 year standard warranty. Budget $1,500–$3,000 for a replacement.
  • Microinverters: generally 20–25 year warranties, and being distributed, a failure takes out one panel rather than the array.

Any 25-year savings projection that ignores an inverter replacement is overstating your return.

Making yours last

  • Rinse occasionally. Houston rain handles most of it, but pollen season and construction dust can cost a few percent. Two or three rinses a year is plenty.
  • Watch your monitoring. A single underperforming panel is invisible from the ground and obvious in the app.
  • Trim overhanging branches. Shade costs production, and limbs become projectiles in storms.
  • Inspect after major storms. Look for shifted panels or lifted flashing rather than assuming.
  • Never pressure wash. It drives water past the seals.
